We're Going Back to
Where It All Began
More than 250 years ago, men, women, and children gathered in fields across the colonies hungry for God. They came by the thousands. The Gospel was preached, lives were changed, and a Great Awakening swept across America.
Now, in America’s historic 250th year, we are returning to historic ground where George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening.
We are not going back simply to remember what God did then…
We are going back because we believe he can do it again.
Before there was a nation,there was an awakening.
1730s–1740s — THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING
Before stadiums. Before microphones. Before America was a nation, George Whitefield stood in open fields and preached Christ to crowds of thousands. In 1740, he came to Bohemia Manor, where some 2,000 people gathered to hear him proclaim repentance, salvation, and the new birth. This very ground became part of the First Great Awakening, a movement that helped reshape the spiritual life of the American colonies.
WHY IS OCTOBER 23rd SUCH AN IMPORTANT DATE?
On October 23, 1740, George Whitefield preached to approximately 4,000 people in Middletown, Connecticut. A farmer named Nathan Cole attended the service and wrote that hearing Whitefield preach "gave me a heart wound." His confidence in his own righteousness collapsed, and he became deeply convicted concerning his need for salvation.
Cole described Whitefield as having a "bold, undaunted countenance" and said it seemed as though he were "clothed with authority from the Great God." That day changed Cole's life forever as well as the lives of all who were present on that field.
OCTOBER 23, 1740: THEY CAME BY HORSE, BY FOOT, & BY BOAT TO HEAR WHITEFIELD PREACH.
OCTOBER 23, 2026: WE’RE COMING FROM ACROSS AMERICA TO SEEK GOD FOR ANOTHER AWAKENING.
